The nonprofit watchdog group Judicial Watch announced today that it filed a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit on June 17, requesting documents that show how much time Barbara Bosserman, the DOJ trial attorney assigned to investigate the IRS targeting and harassment of Tea Party and conservative nonprofit applicants during the 2010 and 2012 campaigns, has actually spent investigating.

Bosserman was appointed by Attorney General Eric Holder to oversee the joint Justice Department and FBI investigation into the scandal earlier this year. Her appointment seemed like a “conflict of interest,” according to House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA). Especially in light of the fact that Bosserman contributed $6,750 to Obama campaigns and the DNC from 2004 to 2012, including 12 contributions to Obama for America, according to the Federal Election Commission. After her appointment, earlier this year, Issa and Rep. Jim Jordon (R-OH) issued a letter to Holder demanding that the department remove Bosserman from the case. Many people agreed, calling the investigation a “sham.”

The Justice Department said that it cannot take political leanings into account when assigning cases and that making legal political contributions does not prevent its attorneys from fulfilling their duties without bias.

Holder refused to remove Bosserman, and she failed to appear at a House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing titled, “The The IRS Targeting Investigation: What is the Administration Doing?” on February 6.

However, since that time, few details have been released to the public about the Justice Department’s investigation into the IRS, leading many to speculate on how much, or if any, investigation has actually been done in the half a year since her appointment.

“If there is a serious criminal investigation of the worsening IRS scandal, as promised by Attorney General Eric Holder, then it is the best-kept secret in Washington,” Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton said.

“The mere fact that Judicial Watch had to file a federal lawsuit to find out if the lead DOJ investigator, who is an Obama donor, is spending any time actually investigating the scandal tells us all we need to know about this compromised Justice Department,” Fitton said.
