House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA) had to make another request of the federal government for details about a hard drive crash, in yet another investigation, totally unrelated to the IRS investigation.

This one is an investigation into April Sands, a former employee at the Federal Election Commission. Sands resigned in the spring, after she admitted violations of the Hatch Act, a law the restricts the ability of government officials to conduct political activities while on the job or from government offices.

While Sands admitted to violating the law and resigned, in order to press criminal charges again her, her hard drive was needed. The FEC recently revealed to Congress that her hard drive had crashed and could not be recovered.

According to a letter sent to the FEC today by Issa, “Recent information obtained by the committee suggests that the FEC OIG could not pursue criminal prosecution for the misconduct because the attorney’s hard drive had been recycled by the FEC.”

Issa has asked the FEC to provide information to the Oversight Committee by July 29th, including all documents related to the hard drive loss and documents detailing the FEC’s methods for retaining information on computers.

Before the election, Sands tweeted things like:

Our #POTUS’s birthday is August 4. He’ll be 51. I’m donating at least $51 to give him the best birthday present ever: a second term.

Romney is toast. But POTUS can’t do it all on his own. Don’t forget Congressional races. We need a Democratic sweep. Stay focused.

I don’t understand how anyone but straight white men can vote Republican. What kind of delusional rhetorical does one use?

Dear every single Republican ever, When will U learn that Barack Hussein Obama is simply smarter than U? Stand down. Signed, #Obama2012

If you’re still calling yourself a Republican after the #WarOnWomen, their stated RNC platform, & Birtherism, you are my enemy. Done.

Issa wrote, “The bias exhibited in these messages is striking, especially for an attorney charged with the responsibility to enforce federal election laws fairly and dispassionately. This bias was so strong that Ms. Sands even referred to all Republicans as her enemy.”
